The first record I ever bought with my own pocket money was the sugary and sick-bucket inducing 1976 Eurovision Song Contest winner Save your Kisses For Me* by The Brotherhood of Man. I was 13 at the time and clearly not right in the head! It took me another two years to go back to the record store (why I didn't just go to another store I don't know!) without embarrassment and invested in Ian Dury & The Blockheads no.1 classic Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick (1978). I remember distinctly the B-side, There Ain't Half Been some Clever Bas***ds causing some concern, however. I used a black marker pen to self-sensor the offending word on the record and back cover as I didn't want my dad to see it and get into trouble for buying rubbish. Ironically, he liked the 'A' side very much and would on occasion, with no prior warning, blurt out ...'Hit me with your rhythm stick...two fat persons, click, click, click'! How times have changed, with many albums bearing 'Warning Explicit Lyrics' proudly on the cover.
My first record that was bought for me as a child was a compilation of Gerry Anderson's TV classics, including Fireball XL-5, Stingray, Thunderbirds and of course my favourite Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. Those theme tunes are so dramatic and exicing (well for a 7 year old, anyway) and the use of verbal statements such as '...anything can happen in the next five minutes' is just 'icing on the cake'. What was the first record you bought? Does it still hold fond memories for you, or was it an embarrasement you'd rather forget? Get it off your chest and feel better here! Also what was your favorite album cover? One of my favorites was Upstairs at Eric's by Yazoo...oh, and another surreal album cover that I've just remembered as we speak. Gary Newman/Tubeway Army's, Replicas (1979). Wow, is it really 30 years old, surely not! But it does beg the question...Are 'Friends' Electric!
*I'm only joking about Save Your Kisses For Me - I really like the song very much.
